Perspective is one of the most revolutionary discoveries in art history, transforming how artists depict the world. Before the Renaissance, artwork often relied on symbolism to convey importance—larger figures for kings, smaller for peasants—but lacked depth. Then came Brunelleschi’s groundbreaking discovery of linear perspective, followed by Alberti, da Vinci, and others who forever changed the art world.

Kent Burles, a comics industry veteran and instructor at MTM College, explains:
"Within one generation, artists went from flat, symbolic representations to creating realistic, three-dimensional worlds. That’s the power of perspective!"

In Kent’s recent free masterclass, he highlighted a fundamental truth: everything starts as a cube. Whether it’s a skyscraper, a car, or a human head, reducing objects to simple forms and building from there allows you to maintain structure and accuracy.

Here’s a tip from Kent you can use today:

1. Start with the Horizon Line. This is where the sky and land meet—your foundation for all perspective.

2. Add a Vanishing Point. This is where parallel lines converge, creating depth in your drawing.

3. Draw Through Your Objects. Imagine your cubes, buildings, or characters as if they’re made of glass. Sketch their internal structure first; this builds a stronger, more accurate foundation.

"Perspective isn’t just a system—it’s a tool for storytelling, helping your images come to life with depth and realism."
